Masada is a haughty plateau in a stunning desert setting overlooking the Dead Sea. It is a palace-fortress Herod the Great built to last forever, a refuge for Jewish rebels in the century of Jesus, and later for Christian monks, and a World Heritage Site. All these elements make Masada a must on any Christian itinerary.
Less than 40 years after the crucifixion of Jesus, at the beginning of the Great Revolt against the Romans, Jewish rebels gained control over Masada. The revolutionaries believed in zero-tolerance for the Roman rule. They were encircled by the Roman army, which was the responsible to the most complete siege works in the world. The rebels proffered to take their own lives rather than become slaves. This act has made Masada an icon of the human spirit's struggling for freedom. For Christians in particular, Masada provides greater understanding of the epoch of conflict that was the background to Jesus' ministry.
The Israel Nature & Parks Protection Authority has skillfully restored Masada's enthralling remains; the luminous colors of the frescoes of Herod's cliff-hanging Northern Palace gleam dazzlingly. Masada's latest attraction is its fascinating new museum. The precious relics displayed in dramatically lit rooms, alongside with life-size statues, help visitors imagine not only the last moments of the 960 rebellions at Masada, but also the lives they built there.
